Highstyle, a special editon magazine by Highsnobiety

“The Outfits Issue” is an Highsnobiety’s larger special edition: an ode to the art of making magazines.

This issue includes a Starter Pack compendium of Spring’s best products, high fashion editorials and talks with Sterling Ruby, Tame Impala, Nyjah Huston, Hailey Bieber, Rina Sawayama and Raf Simons.

Highstyle features an interesting interview with the one and only designer who has progressed menswear in more ways: Raf Simons.

For nearly a quarter of a century, the Belgian designer, known as an oracle of subcultural youth, has introduced artists, musicians, and interior designers to an entire generation looking to connect with culture beyond fashion. These creative partnerships that define Simons’ collection lie at the root of his approach is what makes his recent appointment as co-creative director of Prada.

A lot has been said about the designers and creative directors shaping our generation’s aesthetic. Yet much less ink has been spilled about how our own relationship to fashion as shoppers has changed. This issue is dedicated to outfits and the people who make them.

From product pages loaded with the season’s most covetable stuff to cheeky editorials exploring the art of getting dressed, Highsnobiety’s new magazine is an all-new, larger-than-life experience. Starring Migos, Raf Simons by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Tame Impala, Hailey Bieber, Rina Sawayama, Sterling Ruby, Nyjah Huston, Nafe Smallz, Kunichi Nomura, Porches, Camp High, Barragán and even more Migos.

The most anticipated collab of the year, Nike x Travis Scott is finally out.

The most anticipated collab of the year, Nike x Travis Scott is finally out.

Travis Scott and Nike collaborations have always had one thing in common: they’re all pure reflections of the artist’s own personal style.

This time, the anticipated capsule collection features a desert-ispired 90s attitude.
The colorways itself, it’s a desert palette hues: hits of red, purple, aqua blue, brown and sand.

The main piece is the AIR MAX 270, are included in the collection a hoodie, sweatpants and t-shirt.

The Nike x Travis Scott Air Max 270 “Cactus Trails” channels how Travis Scott escapes reality through his own imagination, into a world he and his fans get lost in.

The design brings together a 90s attitude and aesthetic with a well-worn feel. The browns, tans, and oranges at the painted base layer of the exposed foam are derived from a trail-inspired style of overlays with a color palette akin to Travis Scott’s affinity for vintage style.

The midsole combines Nike React foam, with a 270-degree air unit at the heel. The waves on the upper act as an extension of the embedded grooves of the midsole, while fleece at the ankle provides a bit of plush, comfortable appeal.

The Cactus Jack logo appears at the heel-tab and insole, while a retro colored lace-lock holds onto the tongue-tab.

The trail-inspired Nike x Travis Scott Apparel Collection is the embodiment of uniting sportswear comfort with utility. Included are a hoodie, sweatpants and t-shirt.

With cargo features, the hoodie and sweatpants are ideal for the individual who won’t sacrifice comfort for function, and vice versa. Rounding out the collection is the accompanying pocket t-shirt.

Converse x Rokit: contemporary aesthetics and essential monochromes

Converse x Rokit: contemporary aesthetics and essential monochromes

Converse has collaborated with the streetwear brand Rokit for a limited edition capsule collection, inspired by the subcultures of L.A.

Rokit is a label born in the Flower District Downtown of Los Angeles, a place from which it draws great inspiration: the populous streets, the noise of the skeateboards wheels on the hot blacktop, the fervent subculture, represent the driving engine of the brand, which shows through an urban, functional and refined style.

For their collection, Converse and Rokit have reworked the classic silhouette of the Chuck Taylor 70 in an unedited version, inspired by the changes from the urban LA basket: upper in totally black leather and fabric, ton-sur-ton stripes that recall the lines of basket “Half court” field, Rokit logo on the sole and the “All Star” logo embroidered in black.

The capsule is also composed of some apparel items, such as a hoodie and a vest, both designed to balance versatility, functionality and metropolitan style.

Converse x Rokit expresses contemporary aesthetics through an essential monochrome, focusing significantly on details: subtle, strips, logos, premium materials; all the elements that make this collection effective and recognizable.

CLOT SS 2020 “Tropical Pyramids”
May 15, 2020 11:22 am

CLOT SS 2020 “Tropical Pyramids”

The collection that represents an interpretation of a new-age ancient Egypt.

CLOT has tapped into the otherworldly culture of ancient Egypt to inspire its Spring/Summer 2020 collection entitled “Tropical Pyramids.”

While centuries old, ancient Egypt was way ahead of its time in all facets of lifestyle, from what they wore to ways of self-improvement both physically and mentally, to how they viewed themselves as part of the human race.

A heavy use of patterns and layering is seen throughout the CLOT SS20 collection that pays homage to the styling techniques used throughout ancient Egypt, from the elaborate dresses of royalty to the uniforms of slaves.

Every element of clothing was consciously designed, often seemingly chaotic and confused, yet it made perfect sense to those that adorned it. The same can be said for the “Tropical Pyramids” collection that features modern-day prints and graphics that include more obscure references right down to literal references with pyramid and palm trees.

Having journeyed from Vancouver to Hong Kong to Los Angeles, Edison has gained a worldly view of how modern-day culture works, realizing that LA is arguably the epicenter of self-conscious living today a current version of how the ancient Egyptians lived.

This can be seen through the collection’s graphics that delve into the ancient Egyptian’s standpoint of believing they had bigger heads, therefore being able to tap into more parts of their brain giving them a higher sense of power.

Coupled with Edison’s wife’s affinity towards healthy living through meditation, yoga and seeking new-age remedies, the new collection holistically looks at how we can learn from the ways of ancient Egypt in today’s modern landscape.

“It didn’t have any white in it” – Michael Jordan

The history of Air Jordan 1 banned and three special editions drops.

With the success of the docu-series “The last dance”, one of the most interesting and intricated stories has come back: the legendary Air Jordan 1.

We’ll try to tell the highlights of this rich-of-details history, becoming a multi-billion-dollar worldwide phenomenon.

Well, let’s start from the beginning:

In 1984 the Chicago Bulls selected Michael Jordan: although Jordan wasn’t top pick, the Bulls were still confident enough in his abilities to sign him to a seven-year, $6 million deal; the second most largest contract for a Rookie, after Ralph Sampson.

While contract negotiations were progressing with the Bulls, Nike was working on its own deal with Jordan for a pair of shoes intended for him. Here the story becomes incredibly confusing and disputed, but many say that David Falk negotiated the deal with Nike on his own.

The negotiation process was far from easy, as Falk was demanding a lot from whichever brand wanted to sign the young phenom. Jordan loved adidas and wanted to sign with the German giant, but the company was in a state of flux after founder Adi Dassler’s death in 1978 and let Jordan slip through its fingers.

Among the others involved were Nike designer Peter Moore, who came up with the Air Jordan 1 sneaker design and “Wings” logo (he also gave us the Nike Dunk).

Jordan had no interest in Nike and practically had to be dragged to the company’s presentation in Beaverton, Oregon.

But the Swoosh had the biggest and boldest plan to differentiate Jordan from the rest of the league’s stars. Jordan had preferred adidas because its shoes were lower to the ground than Nike’s. Now Nike was offering an all-new shoe tailored to his needs.

Nike’s original plan was for two primary Air Jordan colorways: a white/black/red colorway (now known as the “Black Toe”) for home games and black/red for road games (now commonly referred to as the “Bred”).

Nike adapted with an alternate colorway that met NBA regulations. This model is now referred to as the “Chicago” colorway. With all of this going on behind the scenes, Jordan took to the court in the Air Jordan 1 for the first time on November 17, 1984, against the Philadelphia 76ers. He continued to flip between the Air Ships and Air Jordan 1s for the rest of the season.

Jordan took a chance and wore the black/red Air Jordan 1 during the All-Star Weekend’s Slam Dunk Contest in February 1985. As the contest wasn’t an official NBA game, Jordan got away with it.

But after seeing the shoes, the NBA commissioner’s office sent another letter on February 25, 1985, reminding Nike that Jordan couldn’t wear the black / red colorway, because “It didn’t have any white in it.”: the only NBA shoes allowed, in fact, was only white.

Nike went on to mythologize these “banned” letters, generating hype for Air Jordan and even making an ad about the affair (yet failing to mention it was an Air Ship that had set things off).

The “banned” controversy gave Nike’s marketing team space to push the shoes as an act of rebellion, and sales went through the roof.

Jordan continued to wear the Air Jordan 1 in the 1985-86 season, but broke his foot three games into the campaign and missed 64 games. When Jordan returned in March of that season, Nike fitted him out with an unreleased Air Jordan 1 with ankle support straps.

At least 23 different OG Air Jordan 1 models and colorways were released, but there is no way to confirm exactly how many came out.

Registration closes on Monday, 11th of May at 12:00 PM.

We want to honor this compelling history with three AIR JORDAN 1 DROPS:

Air Jordan 1 Retro High Obsidian UNC

Air Jordan 1 Retro High Black Crimson Tint

Air Jordan 1 Retro High Twist Wmns

Life during lockdown: Sneaker Freaker Interviews Black Box’s Brand Director Gianluca Salute

Life during lockdown: Sneaker Freaker Interviews Black Box’s Brand Director Gianluca Salute

Since 2002, Sneaker Freaker has been a milestone magazine for providing international spread of sneaker culture, collabs and customs, rare limited edition, and every news linked to this immense world, born from the creative mind of its founder Simon ‘Woody’ Wood, considered one of 30 most influencial people of this industry, according with Complex.

Started as a fanzine for few sneakers obsessed, Sneaker Freaker has become a big company, with three components: agency, digital and online / off-line magazine.

With three important bases in Melbourne, London and Berlin, Sneaker Freaker has been able to renew itself and remain upward despite the delicate transition from printed to digital, managing to establish itself as one of the most reputable sources even within a very demanding audience.

Aside from the magazine, Sneaker Freaker has also partnered with various brands to create published books, such as “The Ultimate Sneaker Book”: 700-page anthology covering 100 years of sneaker history, a real vademecum that tells, in depth, what has been the world of sneaker culture so far.

We had the pleasure of getting interviewed by Sneaker Freaker which, during this uncertainty moment, gives voice to local retailers who share life and business during the lockdown.

Sneaker Freaker investigates how Black Box, Bodega, Overkill and Urban Jungle faced this unprecedented time, social distancing measures, and turbulent economic period for sneaker retailers, uncertain of their futures.
Read the whole interview:

,,Where are you located? What are the current restrictions set in place by local authorities?

Bodega: Boston and Los Angeles. Currently, all non-essential business must remain shut until we get the okay from State Government.

Overkill: Berlin. All retail shops except groceries, drugstores, and hardware stores have been shut down. So we also had to close our physical stores.

Black Box: We’re based in Italy, in Rome and Naples.

In the past month, what’s been the biggest change to your business?

Bodega: With our core of traditional retail shut down, all of our efforts go to online. The stores are entirely on pause.

Overkill: We have a strong community and a lot of loyal customers who love to visit us in our stores. There’s also tourists and occasional customers. However, all of that isn’t happening at the moment, so our task is to reach these people online and compensate for the missing physical shopping experience.

We also have been challenged with our internal work routines to provide as much safety as possible for our staff. Some of them are working from home, and the others who have to go to the office are working in shifts and are as separated as possible to keep the distance. It’s a completely new situation for us, but we got used to it, and everything is running quite smoothly.

Black Box: Our mission has always been making the brick-and-mortar more than just a place to buy, the store is the place to breath the culture, to feel the energy, and discover our brand selection. Closing our stores is a dramatic drop in the cash flow, but on the other hand, it’s tough not being able to get in touch with our consumers. Through online and socials, we are trying to stay close as much as possible to them.

How has the typical day-to-day management of the store changed? What is a typical day like at the moment?

Bodega: We’re putting more effort into creating in the moment for online, and making meaningful products for our people. We made hand sanitiser to giveaway and donate to a homeless shelter. Long-time collaborators are handmaking masks, and we donate these via those sales. More time is spent just to communicate quickly, to balance the increased workload. We also have a lot of efforts going on to help many of our community who have been displaced out of work.

Overkill: Stores are closed, but there’s still a lot going on at the office. Our dispatch department has more to do than before, as well as our customer support, who are working through questions about shipping times and restrictions for foreign countries. In marketing, there’s a little change from planning events and other activations, to more community support with raffles, providing DJ sets, and more.

Black Box: All the usual business plans have changed. We have set a plan to save all our employees’ jobs. Our retail team is in contact weekly with our store managers. As Directors and Managers, we are facing the issue of planning new scenarios in order to make the business sustainable for the months to come, planning actions to protect ourselves and our team in the best way possible. We chat on a weekly basis with our main suppliers, to plan the actual and future orders. Also, I’m constantly in touch with friends in the industry from many countries to listen and plan for what’s coming next. To be honest, I’m overworking compared to the times we’re used to!

How will you adapt your business over the next few months?

Overkill: That depends on how the authorities will loosen up the restrictions. As soon as the stores are allowed to re-open, we will return to our brick-and-mortar business. Of course, there will be a few things to consider for general safety, like how to keep distance, or using facemasks.

We will keep on with our online business as usual, while providing some specials like sales and free shipping, which we’ve been doing since the shutdown.

Anything you want to say to SF readers? How can the community support?

Bodega: Take care of yourself, your family and friends. Be thoughtful and kind to your fellow Freakers!

Overkill: Most important thing is to support your local businesses. Not just the sneaker and streetwear retailers, but also your favourite restaurants, book stores, and record dealers. Almost everyone provides a delivery or takeaway service, so you don’t have to stop buying at those stores. And… please stay home!

Black Box: First of all, stay safe and do not underestimate this virus. We have seen that the hard restrictions, even if they have affected our life, business and love, have been part of the solution. Now is not the time to give up – you have to make further small sacrifices. Sneaker Freaker has always been a real point of reference in this industry, through the paper magazine, the website, and the wonderful Ultimate Sneaker Book, which is a real bible for all the lovers of this business. I’m sure we will all rise up!

How do you think COVID-19 will affect the long-term future of the sneaker scene?

Bodega: Long-term, the sneaker scene will still dominate the world. This is just a road bump. We’ll keep growing and taking on more untapped markets, but with the principles of sustainability and compassion more in the forefront.

Overkill: At present, maybe people are reflecting on themselves and their consumer behaviour. Maybe they’re gonna be more selective when buying sneakers in the future, and won’t be copping the fourth and fifth all-white classic sneaker. However, on the other side, I’m also pretty sure that when the global recession comes to an end, the regular capitalism will catch up with us again.

Black Box: I think we will live two phases, one until the end of the year, and a second one in 2021 when we will really see what the real impact has been. It’s hard and sad to say, but I think in the future, we won’t have small players which are not financially strong. Suppliers already started this process a couple of years ago, in reducing the access point in the market, now this emergency has accelerated this process. Online will grow and grow, but beautiful retail stores are needed to connect with the local community.

What have you learned in the past few weeks about yourself and your business?

Bodega: When things are going well, you take moments and people for granted. I’ve continued to have profound experiences through Bodega allowing me to explore art, music, counterculture, and fashion in a quest of building a community. I value all of it, and the people who have helped me along the way, even more now.

Black Box: On a personal level, I have learned that everything I have done in the past and how I have treated others now is coming back in different ways. I’m lucky to have a lot of friends in many countries, and this is a real fuel that gives me the strength to think of a better future. Business wise, I have learned now more than ever that this business is not a game. A lot of people outside think that selling sneakers is an easy thing – it’s not. Passion, knowledge, hard work, and teamwork have been the bases to build our company.

Human Made and Adidas present new Superstar 80 Limited Edition

Nigo presents the latest chapter in his ever-evolving collaborative relationship with adidas

Adidas Originals x Human Made will be available for purchase on April 24th

Registration is NOW OPEN on Black Box

Human Made was founded by Nigo in 2010, serving as the primary apparel and footwear-focused venture for the visionary designer, photographer, curator and music producer.

Under the Human Made banner, Nigo continues to create products that are unmistakeably his own. Human Made is both grounded in the functionality of vintage Americana and elevated by Nigo’s instinctive understanding of youth culture as it continues to evolve.

Hip-hop has always been a core influence in Nigo’s work, and so it seems fitting that the latest team-up between adidas and their long-term collaborator should be in celebration of the adidas Superstar. Worn with pride in the eighties hip hop scene and immortalised in verse by Run DMC, 2020 sees the ageless shoe still going strong as it enters its 50th year.

The Human Made Superstar focuses on the three most iconic Superstar colorways, applying a host of subtle and not-so-subtle design flourishes to white, black and black & white versions of the shoe.

The Human Made heart logo is presented in eye-catching red on the heel, but also in a stripped-back, perforated form between the three stripes. The brand’s slogan, ‘Gears For Futuristic Teenagers’ also appears: a slogan that could apply not only to Nigo’s own multi-disciplinary output but also this most enduring of street-ready adidas shoes. Here, it is written proudly across the three stripes themselves, in a way that embodies just how close the partnership between adidas and Nigo has become after all this time.

The first comprehensive book on the work of Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER, an icon of Harajuku streetwear and the presumptive heir to the heavy mantle of Japanese deconstruction. Pages: 256

Yamamoto & Yohji Book

Since the early ’80s, Yohji Yamamoto’s groundbreaking silhouettes and innovative design aesthetic have propelled him to the highest rank of the international avant-garde. Distinguished by his anti-fashion approach, Yamamoto changed the face of contemporary fashion, radically transforming it with asymmetrical and highly conceptual designs partly inspired by the techniques of traditional Japanese kimonos.

His vision came as a refreshing contrast to the power suits and brightly clad fashions of the time, forcing a reconsideration of the future direction of fashion.

In YAMAMOTO & YOHJI, this luxuriously bound book explores all the major themes in his forty years of counter-fashion design showing for the very first time his work not only on the Yamamoto brands but as well on his brand Y’s and these various collaborations in architecture, movies, plays, literature. Cool: Style, Sound, And Subversion Book

This book is equal parts historical chronicle and handbook of subcultures that have influenced style.

The authors have compiled a comprehensive list of subcultures that have evolved over more than 100 years, taking a look at the fashion, the art, the music, and historical context of these style movements.

Lavish with original illustrations, this book references a wealth of ephemera including timelines, zeitgeist films, zines, secret music scenes, and art collectives to give the reader a thoroughly vibrant picture of each movement and their sub-movements. Rizzoli. Pages: 272

Hiroshi Fujiwara: Fragment Book

The first monograph on the “godfather of streetwear,” this book pays homage to Hiroshi Fujiwara’s influence on contemporary fashion, music, and design.

The most comprehensive book devoted to the extensive work of Hiroshi Fujiwara-a pioneer in streetwear, music, and art, and the ultimate arbiter of cool. Known internationally as one of the founding fathers of Tokyo’s Harajuku scene, Fujiwara exerts a disproportionate influence over contemporary design culture.

Having collaborated with the likes of Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood as a teenager in the early 1980s, he merged a seminal interest in punk with hip-hop and skate culture to become one of Japan’s principal tastemakers.

A musician and producer, Fujiwara is also one of the most prolific sneaker designers, and his kicks are some of the most sought-after collectibles. In addition to his very visible and long-standing collaborations with Nike, he has authored a number of fashion lines and is at the head of the Tokyo-based Fragment Design.

March 5, 2020 11:43 am

It fuses the worlds of of perfume with art to create new experiences by scent.

This creative fragrances revolutionize the consumers perceptions and their senses. Each perfume telling a story based on an iconic work of literature.

The unisex perfume “Against Nature”

is inspired by Joris-Karl Huysmans’ 1884 novel of the same name: it’s a mix of notes of metal, lacquer and blood.

For this fragrance, Han has collaborated with New York artist Rafael Melendez who has created a series of illustrations which have been digitally manipulated to reflect the protagonist’s fascination with recreating the natural as artificial.

  • TOP: Pink Pepper, Lemon, Juniper, Green, Metal
  • HEART: Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Lavender, Lacquer
  • BASE: Musk, Vetiver, Amber, Sandalwood, Patchouli 60ml

The unisex perfume “On the Road”

is inspired by Jack Kerouac’s seminal novel about the beat generation and 1950s America.

“On the Road” is a unisex perfume that polarises by telling a tale of restlessness and an unbridled desire to experience the beat counter-culture of a Jazz fuelled post-war America.

For this fragrance Han has collaborated with London based artist Cedric Christie who has taken a series of photographs during a journey across America giving a modern twist on the traveller’s tale across the US.

  • TOP: Galbanum, Lemon, Bergamot, Lavandin
  • HEART: Amyris, Cedarwood, Patchouli
  • BASE: Tonka Bean, Oakmoss, Guaiacawood, Benzoin, Birch, Vanilla, Labdanum, Perou 60ml

The unisex perfume “The Decay of the Angel”

inspired by Yukio Mishima’s 1971 novel of the same name

Is a rich exotic burnt floral fragrance with a subtle headiness that comes from the smell of desire infused by flowers on the wane; the scent of a falling angel.

For this fragrance we have collaborated with Warsaw based artist Gosia Sobczak who has created a series of illustrations that depict the five signs of the decay of an angel.

  • TOP: Mandarin, Neroli, Rose, Ylang, Frankincense
  • HEART: Sambac Jasmin, Acacia, Cade
  • BASE: Oudh, Cedarwood, Patchouli, Tonka, Labdanum 60ml

The unisex perfume “She Came to Stay”

is inspired by the novel of the same name by Simone de Beauvoir.

The story is one that examines questions of self identity and our place in a world on the brink of change.

She Came to Stay captures the individuality of your spirit and transforms itself into a lingering expression that breaks free from the conventional into a fragrance which critics have called “beautifully addictive”.

LA Artist Kirtland Ash has interpreted this notion of identity in a series of limited edition collages to compliment the fragrance.

  • TOP: Geranium, Basil, Lemon
  • HEART: Indonesian Clove, Nutmeg
  • BASE: Patchouli, Vetiver, Labdanum, Oakmoss, Cedarwood 60ml

Therefore, a company will no longer be able to sell and ship nike shoes outside of its continent, never more.

Nike’s announce sounds like this: “This communication is to inform you that effect January 1, 2020 Nike will not permit international shipping (defined as shipping outside of your trading territory) of Nike products to consumers.
